Your first meeting

Worried about attending your first meeting? Here are some tips that might make it easier.

Arrive early, or late

We are a drop-in group, so you can come and leave whenever you need to. If you are worried about not being able to find the group or turning up late, turn up as early as you need to and wait outside the room. We can’t promise we will be there, but we will invite you in when you arrive! Or, if you find that situation awkward, turn up 10 minutes after the start time so there is no hanging around beforehand.

Do a trial run

Print out or write down the directions to finding the room, then do an advanced trip to the hospital in order to find the room. That way, when you come for real, you will know exactly where you are going.

Don’t worry if you don’t make it

Some people plan to attend, but never manage to muster up the courage. Others come to the hospital, but then dare not come in the room. That is fine! Think of it as graded exposure. If you don’t manage to walk in the door the first time, be proud of yourself for trying, and given it another go another time.

Bring someone to support you

Anxiety Leeds is only open to people who have personal experience with anxiety. However, you are welcome to bring a friend or family member along with you to provide emotional support.

Remember that you don’t have to say anything

Everyone is invited to share their own personal experiences. However, if you just want to sit and listen, that is fine too!
